Veteran Writer Ashokamitran Passes Away




Veteran Tamil writer Ashokamitran passed away yesterday at his residence in Chennai owing to age related ailments. He was survived by his wife and three sons.


The prolific writer began his career back in 1952 when he moved to Chennai and worked for Gemini Studios which was then managed by veteran film producer S.S. Vasan.


The recipient of the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award has written has written eight novels, 20 novellas and more than 200 short stories. He has won many awards including the Tamil Nadu Government’s Ilakkiya Chinthanai award, twice in 1977 and 1984.


He is known for his novels such as ’18 Aavadhu Atchakkodu’, ‘Thanneer’, ‘Karaindha Nizhalgal’, ‘Ottran’, ‘Indru’ and ‘Manasarovar’. Known for his proficiency in English, he has also translated Tamil works of literature as well as writing English articles for newspapers and journals.


Despite not working in any films, he has worked closely with those from the industry. His novel ‘Thaneer’ currently being made into a film by Vasanth is the amount of influence this thespian has.


The death of Ashokamitran has shocked the film industry and Kamal Haasan took to Twitter where he said, “திரு. அசோகமித்ரனின்  எழுத்து அவர் காலமும் கடந்து வாழும். அவரை வாசித்து நேசித்து சந்தித்த பெருமை பெற்றவன் நான். நனறி அமரர் அனந்துவிற்கு.” (Roughly translated to – The works of Ashokamitran will stand past his times. I feel proud in meeting him, reading his works and loving him for this. Thank you).


Kalyan Raman, who translated four of his Tamil fiction books, said on Twitter, “I have such happy memories of his warmth and friendship. Go well, sir. Goodbye.
